Coast Guard tours contractors at Birmingham campus

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The U.S. Coast Guard is moving ahead with plans to transform the former Birmingham-Southern College campus into its ninth training campus, hosting contractors Wednesday and Thursday for an Industry Day to outline the work needed before trainees arrive.

The event gave contractors a firsthand look at the 192-acre campus as the Coast Guard prepares to establish a permanent presence in Birmingham. Officials said the initial focus will be on preparing 16 buildings while maintaining operations across the campus.
