JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Scammers are finding new ways to steal card information as technology changes, according to cybersecurity and consumer protection experts. Skimming once meant a hidden device on a gas pump or card reader. Now, a scammer could steal card information without touching it.
Skimmers steal card numbers
UAB cybersecurity expert Dr. Ragib Hasan said scammers use small skimming devices to steal card numbers.
“They can then use that to make fake fraudulent transactions using your credit card number or they can even clone your card,” Hasan said.
On Wednesday, Cosmin Vaduva and Elena Caldarareasa were charged with planting skimmers at three Jefferson County businesses. Investigators arrested the pair in Mississippi with skimmers, fake cards and more than $10,000 in cash…
