A former South Florida nursing school operator has pleaded guilty in a sweeping federal fraud investigation that prosecutors say helped place thousands of individuals into the healthcare system with falsified educational credentials, raising renewed concerns over patient safety and oversight in the nursing profession.

Carleen Noreus admitted guilt on June 15 to conspiracy-related charges after authorities alleged she participated in the sale of approximately 2,600 fraudulent nursing diplomas and transcripts.

The guilty plea is part of the broader federal investigation known as Operation Nightingale, a yearslong Justice Department effort targeting South Florida nursing schools accused of issuing fake academic credentials.
