GALLERY: King tides flood parts of Palm Beach County

LANTANA, Fla. (CBS12) — The waterfront view came a little too close for diners at Kona Bay Cafe when a king tide pushed water into part of the restaurant’s parking lot.

“We wanted to sit by the water, of course, and the water ended up in the parking lot, so kind of lost that spot,” said Christopher Phillips, who was visiting the area.

The ponding in Lantana was modest compared with flooding farther south. Video from Miami showed water running down a road, while streets also flooded in parts of Broward County over the weekend. In West Palm Beach, water reached parts of Flagler Drive.

The National Weather Service warned Monday that king tides could bring moderate coastal flooding to portions of the Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade coastlines during high tide.

King tides are exceptionally high tides. Around a full or new moon, the sun and moon’s gravitational pulls reinforce each other, raising the high tide. Water can reach low-lying streets and parking lots even when it has not rained, then recede as the tide goes out…
