MERIDIAN, Idaho — An Idaho father is facing felony charges months after a Thanksgiving week crash that killed his 7-year-old son, with investigators alleging cellphone activity, speeding and other factors contributed to the fatal collision on Interstate 84, KTVB reported. Authorities say newly filed court documents outline extensive phone use in the minutes leading up to the wreck, according to The New York Post.
Austin Summers, 31, of Meridian, was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of injury to a child after a Canyon County prosecutor reviewed findings from the Idaho State Police investigation, Idaho Statesman reported. Court records indicate the charges were filed this week, roughly eight months after the Nov. 25, 2025, crash. Summers is being held in the Ada County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Investigators allege Summers was driving a GMC Sierra pickup at approximately 73 to 75 mph in a posted 65 mph zone when he struck the rear of a Ford F-450 that was moving at about 7 mph because of mechanical problems in the right lane of I-84 in Canyon County.
