DENVER (KDVR) — A juvenile is facing federal charges after several “swatting calls” were made to universities across the country in the summer of 2025, including the University of Colorado Boulder.
On Thursday, the United States Attorney of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced that a juvenile, who will remain unnamed due to their age, is facing charges after a string of swatting calls — hoax calls made to emergency services to draw a large response from law enforcement, specifically the SWAT team.
FBI investigates CU Boulder swatting incident as cases rise across the U.S.
This comes after CU Boulder received a call that reported shots fired at the Norlin Library, which caused a campus-wide shelter-in-place and a heavy police response in August of 2025. It was later determined to be part of a string of swatting calls across the country, including universities and other institutions in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
After a nationwide investigation into these calls, including the CU Boulder Police Department working with the FBI on the case, a juvenile was arrested. The DA’s office said the suspect was a self-identified member of the cybercriminal group “Purgatory.”…
