Lafayette City Council to consider permanent cemetery closure for casket burials

The Lafayette City Council will on Tuesday consider permanently closing the city’s cemetery to casket burials, after an underground survey showed that the facility “can no longer provide additional burial capacity.”

If the council decides to approve the resolution, the Lafayette Cemetery would still allow cremains burials for existing plot owners, according to a staff memo for the upcoming meeting. The restriction on casket burials would go into effect June 30.

City staff is recommending that the council approve the closure based on “advice received from the State Archeologist,” in addition to evidence found in a ground penetrating radar analysis released this week, the memo says…
