Newark Man Arrested in Deadly New Jersey Chick-fil-A Shooting That Killed 23-Year-Old

Union Township, NJ — A 23-year-old man was killed and six others were wounded when gunfire erupted inside a busy Chick-fil-A on Route 22 last month, and prosecutors say a suspect is now in custody. Jaheed Fields, 20, of Newark, was arrested Friday and charged with murder and multiple additional offenses tied to the April 11 shooting.

The attack unfolded around 9 p.m. inside the restaurant, where customers had gathered for an ordinary evening before shots rang out, turning the crowded dining area into a scene of panic.

Arrest follows weeks-long investigation

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Fields was taken into custody on Friday in Newark. He has since been lodged in the Essex County Jail, where he remains held pending his next court appearance.

Authorities charged Fields with murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting. Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive or clarified whether the victim was specifically targeted…
