STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents should prepare for a dreary Memorial Day weekend as rain, gusty winds and hazardous beach conditions continue through Sunday before improvements arrive early next week.

The National Weather Service forecasts persistent rain through the remainder of Saturday, intensifying overnight into Sunday morning with the potential for moderate to briefly heavy downpours, especially near coastal areas. Peak rainfall rates could reach 0.25 to 0.50 inches per hour late Saturday night into Sunday, with total accumulations approaching 1.50 inches across the New York City metro area by Monday.

Coastal winds will strengthen Saturday night through Sunday morning, with sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 25 to 35 mph.
