‘I don’t feel safe:’ Staten Islander says his car, with only 5K miles, is plagued by dangerous glitches

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — For the past five months, Brett Grant’s 2024 Jeep Compass has been showing signs of distress: Persistent warning lights and messages pop up on the dash, the automatic emergency braking system randomly disables itself and “service 4WD” indicators are consistent. Blind spot monitoring and auto headlights fail intermittently too.

Grant, a New Dorp resident, brought the vehicle in for three repair visits starting in March, the last of which resulted in a replacement of the Power Take-Off, commonly referred to as the Power Transfer Unit, a component of the car’s 4×4 drivetrain. But it didn’t work. According to Grant, the warnings returned as soon as he drove out of the service center.

“There’s only a little more than 5,000 miles on this car, it’s basically brand new,” Grant said. “These problems are intermittent but dangerous and highly distracting while driving. And after they replaced the transfer unit, the issues became worse.”…
