CLAYTON — A veterans’ ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St.
Retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Charles Eggleston, a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, will speak.
Eggleston joined the Army in 1992 and deployed to Iraq multiple times. During his third deployment, in 2005, he was critically injured by an improvised explosive device, sustaining injuries that required more than 70 surgeries.
In retirement, Eggleston has become an advocate for veterans, speaking out about their care and supporting them in his civilian life.
This year’s ceremony will include the Presentation of Colors by American Legion Post 71, the National Anthem by Tempest Watkins, an “Amazing Grace” bagpipe performance by Joe Brady of the Wake & District Pipe Band and a drill exhibition by Clayton High School’s Navy Junior ROTC.
Along with the upcoming ceremony, the town is launching Operation Green Light, an initiative dedicated to supporting and honoring veterans. From Nov. 4 through Veterans Day, the town encourages residents and businesses to display green lights as a symbol of appreciation for the service and sacrifices of veterans.
