CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – An eastern Iowa veteran who volunteered for the Vietnam War at 19 years old continued serving his community until the final chapter of his life.
Gerry Wegmann enlisted voluntarily in 1969. According to his wife, Jane Wegmann, he made that choice to protect his siblings.
“He was told that if he came in voluntarily, none of his brothers would get sent to Vietnam and he had six other brothers and four sisters,” Jane Wegmann said.
