Disruptive Mill Avenue paving project to bring closures in downtown Tempe

East Valley drivers should prepare for traffic impacts on Mill Avenue, University Drive and Rio Salado Parkway starting Tuesday as a new paving project gets underway in downtown Tempe.

Crews will begin a series of roadway improvements May 26 as part of the final phase of the Downtown Tempe Refresh Project, including removal of pavers from intersections and milling Mill Avenue from University Drive to Rio Salado Parkway.

How long will the Mill Avenue construction last?

The work will take place in three phases. The traffic restrictions beginning Tuesday are part of Phase 1, which will affect Mill Avenue from north of University Drive to south of Fifth Street. That phase is expected to last through June 7.

During each phase, Mill Avenue and portions of side streets intersecting with Mill Avenue will be closed to vehicle and bicycle traffic. Pedestrian access and access to businesses will be maintained, along with local traffic access during some phases…
