North Charleston looks to turn vacant city lots into affordable homes

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Vacant lots across North Charleston could soon become new homes as the city moves forward with an effort to expand affordable housing opportunities in neighborhoods like Accabee and Union Heights.

City leaders identified 10 unused city-owned lots in August 2025 that were no longer needed for municipal purposes. Instead of selling the land traditionally, officials launched a process allowing nonprofits and developers to apply for the properties if they planned to build affordable housing.

So far, four of the lots have been awarded to organizations including Charleston Habitat for Humanity and Bridge North Charleston. The city now plans to reopen applications for the remaining six lots…
