CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Parks Conservancy has opened the Ashleyville-Maryville Food Forest at a historic West Ashley neighborhood site to provide free, sustainable harvests for residents.
The restored green space includes fig, peach, lemon, and grapefruit trees; blackberry and strawberry plants; shiitake mushroom logs; herbs; and pollinator-friendly seedlings, according to Charleston Parks Conservancy.
The food forest aims to supply free, seasonal, organic produce for residents while promoting biodiversity and long-term sustainability. A food forest is a sustainable, low-maintenance garden system that mimics a natural forest ecosystem while producing food.
