CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The city of Charleston is improving much of its stormwater system, focusing on several projects by revitalizing aging infrastructure, something the city says will also benefit pedestrians and residents.
The battery extension, which will total about five miles around the peninsula, is one of several projects in the works, and leaders say it will be crucial in minimizing the impact of storm surge.
“Our existing batteries provide that protection, so the idea is to really just extend that up the peninsula to provide that protection,” director of resilience for the City of Charleston Kaylan Koszela said. “Some of these, we’re also looking at how we can work with Mother Nature for more nature-based solutions for our marshes to help us get that buffer against some of the flooding and tidal and storm events as well.”…
