HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCSC) — The Town of Hollywood is moving forward with a potential hate crime deterrence ordinance.
The town council passed the first reading on Monday and now faces an additional reading at the next meeting before becoming official. The ordinance would allow the town to impose jail time and fines on people convicted of hate crimes.
“It’s important that we’re showing that in the town of Hollywood, hate is not accepted,” Town of Hollywood Mayor Chardale Murray says. “We know hate is in the school. It’s in your job. It’s in the church. And I’ve had several family members that passed and I had the opportunity to funeralize some of those victims that have died, so with the town of Hollywood passing this hate ordinance, that sends a message that it’s not allowed.”…
