Family of longtime Lowcountry shrimper raising money for memorial on Shem Creek

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – A local shrimper who was tragically killed will be honored with a memorial on Shem Creek.

Captain Wayne Magwood was known in Mount Pleasant for the decades he spent on the water catching shrimp. He died in September 2020 when he was hit by a truck crossing Mill Street at Coleman Boulevard.

Captain Magwood’s four daughters are working with the Town of Mount Pleasant to bring a memorial to Shem Creek that will not only honor their father, but the many fishermen, both past and present, of the local maritime industry.

The Fisherman’s Memorial Statue will be located on Shem Creek’s pedestrian bridge, which has been renamed as the Magwood Boardwalk.

Tressy Magwood Mellichamp, one of Magwood’s daughters, said there will be a QR code on the memorial that visitors can scan to learn more about current fisherman and what restaurants serve locally caught seafood.

“Dad spent his entire life, dedicated his entire life to the maritime industry and supporting it and trying to give fishermen a voice and to further their causes. And so, by placing this memorial on the bridge, we’re hoping that its going to continue that dialogue for all of these fishermen and we think it’s a wonderful way to pay homage and to honor him and his memory,” Mellichamp said.
