Man shoplifts, flees and assaults officers before arrest: report

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – A man was arrested Tuesday after shoplifting, leading police officers on a chase that resulted in a traffic collision and assaulting officers, according to the Summerville Police Department (SPD).

Tommy Browner was charged with shoplifting greater than $2,000, assault on police while resisting arrest, and pedestrian in the roadway.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, SPD received a call saying a man was in the process of shoplifting from Home Depot at 190 Marymeade Drive.

When the officer arrived, he spoke with a Home Depot employee and was told that a man in the store was stealing items and hiding them in a vacuum box in the plumbing section, said SPD.

When the officer tried to stop the suspect, identified as Browner, he ran into the road on Berlin G Myers Parkway. Two vehicles driving on the parkway crashed into each other in an attempt to avoid hitting Browner, a press release stated.

Another officer involved in the chase was able to apprehend Browner, but Browner punched the officer.
