CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An “Air Quality Alert” is in effect across the Lowcountry as smoke from wildfires burning in southern Georgia drifts into the region, according to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services.
The alert, issued for fine particulate pollution, includes Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, and Dorchester, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties through Thursday night.
The poor air quality is being driven by smoke from wildfires burning in parts of southern Georgia, including Brantley County, where fires have burned thousands of acres. Officials in Georgia report that dozens of homes have been affected, and some residents have sought shelter as crews continue to battle the flames.
