CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Ted Turner, the media mogul who founded CNN and reshaped television news, died Wednesday at age 87, leaving behind a legacy that includes ties to South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
Turner had a lasting connection to The Citadel. While he did not attend The Citadel himself, all three of his sons – Teddy, Beau, and Rhett – graduated from the college. He later received honorary degrees in 1987 and 1992 and delivered commencement addresses in both years, according to a statement from the school.
Citadel leaders said Turner was a generous supporter of its academic and athletic programs, contributing to the education and development of cadets.
“The Citadel family is deeply saddened by the passing of the great Ted Turner,” said Citadel President Gen. Glenn M. Walters. “Ted Turner’s long legacy of business success, public philanthropy and iconic leadership reflected The Citadel ideals of honor, duty and respect well and he will be missed on our campus.”…
