Free Charlotte Soul Fest brings music, art and Black-owned vendors to First Ward Park

Charlotte Soul Fest, a free, one-day community festival celebrating Black art, music, food and culture, returns to First Ward Park on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Now in its second year, the event is organized by KMarie Walters, a Fox Sports producer who moved to Charlotte from Los Angeles in 2016. She said she was surprised that a city where Black residents make up the largest minority group lacked a large-scale, free cultural festival centered on Black culture.

“Coming from places like Los Angeles, and having worked in Atlanta and New York City, I was definitely used to huge cultural festivals celebrating all that is Black,” Walters said. “It was something I was looking for here. And I just decided to create it.”…
