Construction underway for new bridge over the Catawba River near Belmont

BELMONT, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A nearly century-old bridge over the Catawba River between Gaston and Mecklenburg counties will soon be replaced and widened, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Construction began last month on the 93-year-old bridge. Crews have worked to clear the area on the Gaston County side of the Catawba River along NC-7 (Catawba Street).

The US-74 (Wilkinson Blvd) Catawba River Bridge, also known as the Sloan’s Ferry Bridge, will soon be replaced and widened from four to six lanes, with three lanes in each direction. The project also includes adding 10-foot multiuse paths on both sides of the bridge.

Additionally, US-29/74 at NC-7 will be reconstructed into a reduced-conflict intersection. Improvements will also be made to the NC-7 intersections at Hazeline Avenue and Moores Chapel Loop…
