Gaston County man gets life in prison for drug-fueled brutal murder of roommate

GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Gaston County man was sentenced to life in prison Monday for brutally killing his roommate at their home.

According to District Attorney Travis Page, Samuel Colt Usery was convicted of first-degree murder in the March 12, 2023, killing of 21-year-old Michael Drayton Jr. Following the conviction, Superior Court Judge Donald Cureton handed down a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

He was initially charged with second-degree murder.
