‘Highly disappointing’: NC high school track team appeals controversial disqualification over athlete’s gesture

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Mallard Creek High School’s boys track head coach Sam Willoughby is still trying to find answers after his athlete was disqualified for holding up his hand during the 4×400-meter relay state final on Saturday.

“Why would you want to DQ Mallard Creek? What did we do?” said Willoughby. “Why are the rules so stiff on us?”

“We needed to have that victory in order to win the state championship again.”
