Former shipyard worker sues DoorDash, unlicensed delivery driver after devastating crash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A former shipfitter at the Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipyard has sued DoorDash and one of its drivers following a crash that left him with catastrophic brain injury.

Jeremiah D’Auria was 21 in May, 2025 when he was riding his Honda motorcycle southbound on Warwick Boulevard near Oyster Point Road. Ariel Diaz-Borrero, then 32 and holding only a Florida learner’s permit and not a driver’s license, exited a nearby Dairy Queen and pulled onto Warwick Boulevard in his Toyota Camry on a delivery.

According to the lawsuit, Diaz-Borerro made an improper lane change, striking the motorcycle. D’Auria landed in the tree-lined median of Warwick Boulevard. He was taken first to Riverside Regional Medical Center in critical condition, and then transferred while still in a coma to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which specializes in brain injury treatment…
