CAPE CHARLES, Va. (WAVY) — A Colorado man has died and a woman suffered minor injuries after being struck by lightning in Cape Charles Thursday afternoon, according to the town’s fire and police chiefs.
Officials said the two people were struck by lightning on the beach near Jefferson and Bay avenues around 4 p.m. The man went into cardiac arrest, and EMS were on scene performing CPR before the man was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
The storm moved in quickly and there were several people on the beach, including families with kids, officials said.

According to the National Lightning Safety Council, this is the 10th lightning fatality this year, and it’s the first lightning death in Virginia since 2023, when a 73-year-old man was struck by lightning while boating.
