CHALRESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — Friends and family gathered at Naval Station Norfolk on Friday to watch the crew of USNS Kanawha be awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation.
The award is the highest decoration for combat valor a military unit can receive. US Fleet Forces Commander Admiral Karl O. Thomas presented the award at the ceremony and talked to 13 News about what it means to receive it.

“The Presidential Unit Citation is not an award that’s given out very often,” Adm. Thomas said. “You know, to be able to take a strike group like the Gerald R. Ford and the ships that supported her and recognize that they went from one theater in combat right to another theater in combat…all alongside her the whole time were her replenishment ships.”…
