NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – You might see a new face the next time you visit Norfolk International Airport. They recently welcomed their new K9, Lord!
Lord is a German Shorthaired Pointer. Lord and his handler, Officer McCleese comprise one of three active K9 teams working at ORF. They join Corporal Warren and Barry, a Belgian Malinois; and Officer Mann and Bingo, another German Shorthaired Pointer.
Before working at the airport, handlers and their K9 partners must complete an intensive TSA Explosion Detection Canine Handler Course conducted at Lackland Air Force Base, part of Joint Base San Antonio in Texas. Officer McCleese and Lord completed their 11-week-long offsite training in early July. ORF teams conduct explosives searches anywhere from aircraft to baggage to vehicles, within terminals or in other open areas as needed.
