CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — On the day America will never forget, hundreds of thousands of people were trapped on the island of Manhattan, and as the nation held its breath, many came together, including one Chesapeake resident, and carried out the largest maritime rescue in history.
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Chesapeake resident Herbert Jones and his brother Robin prepared for another day of work aboard a tugboat in the Hudson River.
“We were working on a tugboat called Alex Gellatly,” Herbert Jones said. “We worked for Gellatly out there. We hauled oil barges, crude oil and all of that.”…
