Man accused of killing Lina Guerra taken into custody

NORFOLK, Va. — A family member has confirmed to 13News Now that David Varela was taken into custody today.

Varela was charged with the first-degree murder of Lina Guerra, his wife of 11 years, after her body was discovered in February in a freezer in their downtown Norfolk apartment. She hadn’t been seen since mid-January.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that Guerra’s cause of death was blunt head trauma, in addition to asphyxiation…
