My Chicagoland roots aren’t easy to hide. I’ve written extensively about Portillo’s over the years, from opining whether or not a location would be successful in Dubuque to covering the launch of their limited edition sandwich in honor of Pope Leo XIV.
So, of course I have to write about the launch of their new limited edition char-grilled beef hot dog, which brings a quintessential Chicago favorite known for its sweet, savory heat to the forefront. I can’t wait to go back home and indulge in one of these dogs, as they are the perfect complement to the steamy July humidity.

Portillo’s Launches Their New “Char’diniera Dog:”
In collaboration with Vienna Beef (the best hot dog you can get), Portillo’s is launching the new “Char’diniera Dog.” Per a press release on their website, the Char’diniera Dog is a char-grilled beef hot dog infused with giardiniera and provolone cheese. It will be available for a limited time starting today (June 30th). It is billed as a dog boasting “medium heat” and “rich and cheesy” flavor with a smoky char finish.
Chicago-style giardiniera is a popular condiment on hot dogs and pizza. Originating from Italian immigrants, it’s essentially a medley of diced peppers, pickled in a vinegar-brine. The acidity of the vinegar cuts through to the sweet/medium heat of the peppers, and provides a light crunch, tanginess, and spice. I enjoy giardiniera quite a bit, but I mostly eat it on pizza. I prefer sport peppers on my hot dog; if you know, you know.
