CPS student detained by ICE, misses final weeks of senior year; mother also held

CHICAGO (WGN) — A Chicago Public Schools high school student is spending the final weeks of his senior year in the custody of law enforcement personnel rather than in the classroom.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained the 18-year-old and his mother during a routine check-in.

“When you have an 18-year-old who should be graduating and going to prom and going to start playing soccer, which is his dream — Ricardo is such an avid and talented football player, and his dream is to keep playing soccer, and he was here and doing that — to just have that ripped away at such a young age and be detained,” said attorney Kelli Fennell who represents Ricardo Hernandez-Navarrete, a CPS senior attending Mather High School…
