New ‘Conviction Integrity Unit’ launched in Tri-State to review wrongful conviction claims

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office has officially launched its new Conviction Integrity Unit, an initiative designed to review claims of wrongful convictions and investigate whether past convictions were lawful and just.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich announced on Tuesday that Donald Caster will serve as the unit’s first director.

The Conviction Integrity Unit will conduct independent reviews of cases in which a person believes they were wrongfully convicted. The goal is to identify and correct errors that may have occurred during the criminal justice process.

“Just like everyone else in this office, my goal is to do justice,” Caster said. “No one in this office wants to be part of a wrongful conviction, and anyone in this office who was aware of one would want to correct one as quickly as possible. My role is simply to drill down specifically on that and focus on that.”…
