Trial of man accused of driving into, killing deputy centers on insanity claim

The case against a man accused of intentionally driving a car into a sheriff’s deputy last year, killing the deputy, largely hinges on his mental state at the time.

While the facts of the crash are largely not in dispute, Rodney Hinton Jr.’s attorneys are expected to ask a jury to find him not guilty by reason of insanity, meaning that because of his mental illness, he didn’t know the wrongfulness of his actions at the time.
