Ohio bill targets harsher penalties in deaths of first responders

CINCINNATI — A bill inspired by the death of a Hamilton County deputy is moving forward at the Ohio Statehouse, aiming to change how the state punishes those convicted of killing first responders.

Deputy Larry Henderson Jr. was killed on May 2, 2025, while directing traffic outside the University of Cincinnati’s graduation ceremony. Investigators say Rodney Hinton Jr. intentionally drove his vehicle into Henderson.

“We all just loved him. He’s deeply missed, and there’s really not enough words to express what he meant to the community and to the department,” said Captain Dave Downing with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office…
