‘Preserve our rich history’: City of Cleveland to redevelop four former school buildings

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The city of Cleveland’s Department of Development plans to partner with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) and Cleveland City Council to redevelop four former school properties on Friday.

To begin the repurposing, the city and its partners are seeking qualifications from professional development teams before beginning to restore properties belonging to Audubon Middle School, Mount Auburn Elementary School, Central High School and Empire Junior High School.

The request for qualifications, the Landmark School Sites Redevelopment Request for Qualifications (RFQ), seeks to preserve and reactivate historic buildings for local communities, according to a press release from the city.

“We want to build on the development momentum taking place on Cleveland’s east side by transforming the Audubon, Mount Auburn, Central, and Empire school buildings into lasting neighborhood assets,” Joevrose Bourdeau Small, director of economic development for the city of Cleveland, said. “This RFQ is an opportunity to return these locally designated landmark buildings to productive use while strengthening the surrounding communities.”…
