COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) — The War Department granted final approval of the location of an Army training center in Columbia and construction began on Camp Jackson on this day in 1917.
The training center, now known as Fort Jackson, saw more than 1,500 buildings built between June and December of 1917 and another 550 buildings added in the next year.
