AUGUSTA, GA — (WRDW/WAGT) Dangerous heat with high humidity will be an ongoing theme through midweek. Most of us will not get rain Sunday, but the storms that do form could contain strong winds, so the Storm Prediction Center has placed the northern CSRA in its Level 1 to 2 risk of severe thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon and evening.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center says there is an 80 percent chance a tropical disturbance in the eastern Gulf of America will become a tropical depression or tropical storm (Bertha) later today or Monday. Models currently take the system toward the Louisiana coast midweek – meaning no direct impacts here in the CSRA.
A front moves in Wednesday that will have a lot to say about the tropical system’s track and whether we get some relief from the heat Thursday through next weekend. Early indications are that it will not produce a ton of rain in the CSRA, but that it will bring slightly cooler temperatures to Georgia and South Carolina with highs falling into the lower 90s Thursday through Saturday.
Until then, very little change is expected Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday with only isolated late day storms, highs holding steady in the middle 90s and heat index temperatures near 105 degrees each afternoon.
