Richland County to begin mosquito spraying outside Columbia city limits

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Richland County Vector Control crews will soon begin spraying for mosquitoes as part of the County’s annual effort to protect public health and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness.

According to officials, crews will conduct routine surveillance, treat larval breeding sites, and spray for adult mosquitoes in densely populated areas outside the Columbia city limits. Because operations are based on surveillance data and environmental conditions, there is no fixed schedule or specific start date for spraying.

“Spraying is just one component of our integrated pest management program,” said Vector Control Manager Olin Towery. “In addition to treatment, we rely on surveillance, public education, and mechanical and biological controls to effectively reduce mosquito populations and minimize both nuisance and disease risk.”…
