Lee County dedicates Liberty Trees at TK Davis Justice Center War Memorial

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) – The Lee County Commission dedicated two Liberty Trees outside the TK Davis Justice Center War Memorial Friday morning as part of the America 250 commemoration.

The Liberty Tree Project honors the original Liberty Tree in Boston, where the Sons of Liberty rallied to ignite the American Revolution 250 years ago. Lee County is one of 52 Alabama counties selected to receive a Princeton Elm, a tree meant to represent freedom, resilience, and community spirit.

Trees tied to war memorial’s message of sacrifice

Lee County Probate Judge and Commission Chairman Jere Colley said the location of the trees, alongside the war memorial, adds meaning to the dedication.

“I think more importantly than the tree that we planted, I think they need to see the names of the people that gave their lives for us,” Colley said. “The tree is just a symbol of our freedom. It’s nothing compared to the blood and families, and the wives, and the kids that don’t have parents because of the freedoms that they fought for.”…
