Phenix City, Columbus residents celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with Fourth of July Parade

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Phenix City and Columbus residents gathered in the streets of Columbus Friday evening to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with the help of a Fourth of July parade.

According to officials, this is the first Fourth of July parade to march along the streets Columbus in 50 years. Approximately 75 entries including soldiers, sports cars, Greek organizations and WRBL News 3’s very own Phil Scoggins, Teresa Whitaker and Bob Jeswald, participated in this historic evening of celebration.

According to parade organizers, the parade kicked off around 6:30 p.m. starting in the TSYS (FIS) parking lot on 1st Avenue. From there, marchers traveled to 14th Street before finally ending at 9th Street.

Officials say the parade, hosted by the Columbus ParksandRecreation, was an enjoyable opportunity for community members to commemorate the nation’s past, present and future.

Mayor Skip Henderson was also at America’s 250th Fourth of July Parade and shared what he hoped parade marchers and attendees took away from the celebration.

“I think what we would hope that everybody in this community focuses on is that despite our uniqueness as individuals, we’re still united with the United States of America: still the greatest country on Earth. And I think if we continue to focus on the things that bring us closer together instead of the things that divide us, we’re gonna make another 250 years look like that.”…
