OPINION — The need for quality early childhood education in East Alabama is an important conversation that impacts families, employers, educators and the future of our communities. Through its ongoing “Our Children. Our Future.” Community Conversations initiative, the East Alabama Early Care and Education Workforce Alliance is bringing people together to discuss challenges, explore solutions and build support for expanding access to high-quality early care and education across the region.
The East Alabama Early Care and Education Workforce Alliance was established through Southern Union State Community College to bring together partners from education, business, workforce development, government and the community to address challenges affecting childcare access and workforce participation across the region.
In Alabama, only about 47% of 4 year olds are enrolled in Pre-K or Head Start programs. At the same time, access to affordable, high-quality child care remains a significant challenge for many working families, making it difficult for parents to enter or remain in the workforce. Even before the pandemic, employers nationwide lost $13 billion in productivity annually due to child care gaps, and nearly 90% of U.S. parents said that childcare problems impacted their ability to work…
