Columbus OKs rental registry to hold landlords accountable

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Columbus City Council is moving forward with a rental registry, which they say will improve accountability of landlords and access for tenants.

However, it has come with some pushback.

Council said the city lacks reliable information about who owns or operates many Columbus rentals. Councilmembers said this is a way to change that; those against this registry said it is redundant.

“It’s about who is in control of the property, meaning whose job it is to take care of their property,” Columbus City Councilmember Nick Bankston said. “Who’s an emergency contact in case something goes wrong in the middle of the night?
