State lawmakers push CPS reform as mother, boyfriend reindicted in Creachbaum case

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — Ohio lawmakers are pushing reforms of child protective services in the wake of the death of 7-year-old Hershall Creachbaum, whose remains were found last July, as the two people charged in connection with his death have been reindicted.

Ashley Johnson, Creachbaum’s biological mother, and her boyfriend, Michael Kendrick, have both been reindicted. Johnson is charged with gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Kendrick is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter and two counts of endangering children.

State Representatives Phil Plummer and Tom Young are working on House Bill 635, which they said is aimed at closing child protective services gaps they described as system failures that contributed to Creachbaum’s death. Creachbaum was autistic, nonverbal and used a wheelchair…
