Attorneys for Kristin Ramsey ask court to extend pretrial deadlines in Ashley Okland case

DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa — Attorneys for Kristin Ramsey, 53, have filed a motion to extend all pretrial deadlines due to the “voluminous” amount of information associated with the case file.

Ramsey is charged with first-degree murder in the 2011 shooting death of 27-year-old Ashley Okland. The case had gone unsolved for nearly 15 years before Ramsey was arrested in March.

The court filing, which was made on Tuesday, states Ramsey’s legal team needs more time to review discovery materials and prepare for pretrial depositions.

“Extending the pretrial deadlines in this case would not prejudice any party,” wrote Brandon Brown of the Parrish Kruidener law firm. “Failing to do so would prevent the defendant from preparing a complete defense and impact her right to a fair trial under the Iowa and United States Constitutions.”

The motion states that the delay won’t harm the prosecution, is necessary for a fair trial and requests that all pretrial deadlines be extended to the status conference scheduled for August 21, in order to allow the defense team enough time to adequately prepare for trial.

This is the second time the defense has requested a delay in pretrial deadlines. In mid-May, the pretrial deadlines were pushed from June 19 to June 30, the current pretrial filing deadline. A judge has not yet ruled on the latest request…
