Detroit Riverfront nears payday as William Smith home finds buyer

The $1.48 million home where disgraced Detroit Riverfront Conservancy CFO William Smith lived while stealing more than $44 million has found a buyer.

An updated property listing Sunday showed the pending sale of the five-bed, six-bath, 3,766-square-foot home in a gated Novi community, one month after the property hit the market. The home is being sold with permission from a federal judge in a controlled process that is expected to give the riverfront nonprofit a chance to recoup money stolen in one of the area’s largest, longest-running and most lucrative frauds.

The home went on sale three months after Smith, 54, lost an appeal of his 19-year federal prison sentence for stealing $44.3 million — money that was supposed to be spent revitalizing Detroit’s industrial riverfront…
