Ariane Lemaire, who studies at Duke University, launched a statewide push to cut down on balloon waste. She built Clear Skies and Seas, a tracking website where people can post photos and locations of balloon scraps they find.
“We have documented several balloons, especially on our beaches,” said Lemaire to WRAL. “It’s really sad to see the balloons contaminating that environment.”
