‘Always about the place’: Mark Hough, Duke’s first landscape architect, retires after 26 years

After 26 years spent restoring historic quads, redesigning outdoor areas and enhancing Duke’s public spaces, University Landscape Architect Mark Hough has announced his retirement.

He leaves the position having contributed 130 acres of new and restored landscapes and with several accolades, including the Alfred P. LaGlasse medal for Professional Landscape Architects, one of the American Society of Landscape Architects’ highest honors.

“I do love this campus and have gained some sense of ownership over it after all these years,” Hough wrote to The Chronicle last month. “On one level, it’s sad to leave, but I feel very good about what has been accomplished in my time.”…
