Project Jupiter switching to less-polluting fuel cells for power

Oracle Corp. and its partners, building the huge Project Jupiter data center complex in the Santa Teresa, New Mexico, area, have dumped their initial power plan in favor of a new one that they promise will produce less air pollution and use less water.

The new power design will replace Project Jupiter’s previous plan to use more-traditional, natural-gas turbines and diesel generators in two microgrids with high air-pollution levels.

Instead, one microgrid using natural gas-powered fuel cells to produce massive amounts of electricity will be built near the data center campus, officials with Oracle and BorderPlex Digital Assets, the project’s developer, announced Monday, April 27…
